According to Dr. Jeffrey Bridge, a researcher at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, suicide rates among African American children aged 5 to 11 have increased since 1993 and are persisting. Suicide was ranked as the 14th leading cause of death among African American youth in 1993, but as of today, it has risen in the 10th place with rates that nearly double compared to other races.
Breaking Barriers Wellness & Counseling is a provider of mental health care in North Carolina that understands the African American culture, knows how to engage with young children and their families (for more effective treatments), and are willing to work and establish trust with patients.
We emphasize the need for early identification of mental health problems in children, for our mental health counselor to better formulate plans for care.
Part of this would be better outreach and engagement of children with mental conditions (along with their family members), understanding community and familial factors that affect children’s mental health, and the urgent need for a culturally responsive mental health service in Raleigh, North Carolina.
